The Caves of Castellana are a complex of underground cavities of karst origin, a UNESCO heritage site, and extend for 3300 meters at a maximum depth of 122 meters, with a constant temperature of about 16 ° throughout the year. They were discovered in 1938 by the speleologist Franco Anelli and are estimated to date back to the upper Cretaceous, about one hundred million years ago.
